Adventures in Balance

Yoga + Pilates + Adventure Retreat
September 15th – 21st, 2018

Lying on the crossroads of Europe and Africa, Morocco beckons you to a world where the exotic becomes commonplace. Join certified Yoga & Pilates Instructor, Rebecca Schefstrom and retreat coordinator, Carolyn Perry, on a magical 6 night /7-day retreat at the boutique hotel of Peacock Pavilions, peacefully nestled in an olive grove just outside of Marrakech.

There’s something very powerful about unplugging from your day to day life and gifting yourself time to be free. Time to strengthen your practice and experience new adventures. Cultivating a daily practice creates the strength, grace and balance which helps guide you through your journey and in your life back home. Travelling and experiencing exotic locations awakens a greater potential as you replace familiar routines with new adventures. We will explore the tools that will help you infuse your daily life with inspiration, energy and balance.

We will start each morning with a mediation, to take space and center ourselves. Followed by a 90-minute all-levels yoga practice that will leave you feeling energized and ready for the daily adventure. In the evening, we finish with a one-hour Pilates practice to reset the body, strengthen the core and do some restorative stretching. The alchemy of meditation, yoga, Pilates, healthy meals combined with spectacular views, and serene grounds will support and nourish your soul, far beyond the week you spend with us. You will come home with a glow that will last for a long time with unforgettable memories.

Get ready for some major adventures on this retreat. First adventure will be a half day guided tour of the Medina (Inner walled city) of Marrakech, where we will explore historical sights, shop in the colorful souks and taste our way through the winding stalls. There will be a full day trip to the Atlas Mountains including time to explore the Berber villages. Upon arrival, we will have a short walk up to the beautiful hotel Kasbah Toubkal for lunch on the terrace with breathtaking views of the Atlas Mountains.

After lunch, the hotel will provide a guide to take us on a moderate level 2-hour hike through rustic Berber villages and maybe even do a little shopping along the way! For those who need more assistance on the hike, mule rides will be available upon request. We have planned a day for you to experience the famous Hamman scrub and massage at the Les Bains Marrakech. A day trip has been planned to visit the lovely Jardin Majorelle Gardens and Yves Saints Laurent Museum followed up with a very special dinner tucked hidden in the heart of the Medina.

As if we didn’t have enough adventures planned, we are adding one more full-day trip to the ultra-laid-back and enchanting coastal city of Essaouira. This is a photographer’s dream to photograph the vibrant blue and white inner walled city. Beyond the colorful medina a vast beach stretching for miles with an option to experience a camel ride caravan on the beach will be a memory to have for a lifetime. We have planned lots of extras at the Pavilion, including a pool party with lunch, a Champagne brunch, and a henna party with cocktails and appetizers party by the pool. Our meals at the Peacock Pavilion’s will feature delicious, healthy, farm-to-fork meals in a beautiful Arabian tent decorated different each day. We can accommodate most special dietary requests with prior notice.

Please join us for an unforgettable Moroccan Retreat! September 15th – 21st, 2018

Peacock Pavilions

When American Maryam Montague and family decided to settle in Marrakech in 2006 her architect husband Chris Redecke spent almost 4 years creating Peacock Pavilions. The owner’s passion for textiles and design means that Moroccan touches throughout this oasis have been artfully mixed with eclectic finds around the globe. Everywhere you turn there is something fascinating to look at. Modern ethnic glamour is the theme at Peacock Pavilions. This luxury oasis is located 20 minutes outside of Marrakech on 8.5 acres of land nestled in its own private olive grove with a breathtaking view of the Atlas Mountains. This stylish and eco-friendly retreat has been featured in publications around the world including Travel & Leisure, NY Times, LA Décor, National Geographic, and numerous travel guides.

Each guest room is stunning and exquisite in its own unique design, featuring gorgeous fireplaces, private bathrooms, and a private terrace to relax and relish in your experience. There are 2 guest pavilions available with 6 double occupancy rooms. Each pavilion has a domed salon, fireplace, kitchen, dining area and patio, making for a wonderful space to relax, read, or meet your travel companions.

At the heart of the property is a beautiful 800 sq. ft. pool, an inviting place to cool off when the weather permits. Chic umbrellas are the perfect spot to sunbathe and relax. Hidden away in the Olive grove is the outdoor cinema, featuring a huge screen, amazing surround sound, deck chair seating and a fire-pit to warm up on those cool evenings. It is a memorable spot to watch classics like Casablanca under the stars. Meditation, yoga, and Pilates classes are held in an open-air space equipped with mats and yoga blocks.

The Practice

All classes are all-levels and no prior experience is needed. Whether a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, there will be a common ground to practice together.  Each class will be curated to the participants attending the retreat and the teacher will be able to provide modifications when needed.

Meditation–

To welcome every day, we will start with a 30-minute meditation practice. You will be instructed on ancient techniques used to promote concentration and allow for a deeper experience. You will learn pranayama (breathing techniques), mantras, hand mudras, and kriyas which all help to calm the mind and prepare you for meditation.  You will be guided through a variety of meditations and given space to apply what you have learned.

Yoga–

Your yoga sessions will be Hatha inspired, thoughtfully sequenced and tailored for the moment. The practice is athletic and will build heat with core strengthening that increases energy levels and focus, targeted breath-work and focus on proper alignment and control. Some poses are held longer and other parts of the class will be flow. You will leave feeling rejuvenated, energized and balanced and ready to take on the day adventures. Yoga Mats and Yoga Blocks are at the retreat center for your use but if you prefer to bring your own Yoga Mat and props, please feel free to do so.

Pilates–

The focus will be bringing the body into balance through deep core strengthening exercises, stretching to support greater flexibility, strengthen the peripheral muscles for healthy joint alignment.  The teacher will offer modifications and variations to suit each student’s individual needs.  Your Pilates practice will create an overall sense of postural improvement and leave you feeling refreshed from the day and ready for a good night sleep and excited for the next day adventure.

Carolyn Perry

Carolyn’s enthusiasm for travel and learning about ancient cultures cultivated in her young adult life. Reading National Geographic magazine and seeing tribal people on the cover, she found hard to believe tribes existed in modern times.  She knew one day that she would travel to these remote places and document everyday life through her photography.  Carolyn’s love of travel lead her to photograph tribal clans in Papua New Guinea, joined expeditions to Trobriand Islands and Sepik River. Fulfilling her dream of documenting life in these villages.  Carolyn has received recognition for her photography of Papua New Guinea from a National Geographic contest.

Carolyn graduated from the prestigious International Tour Management Institute in San Francisco. For fifteen years, she led many tours to Asia, India, Europe, & the Greek Islands.  She retired in the late 90’ s from tour directing and continued to travel world extensively for her own pleasure photographing the world through her own lens.

Carolyn is now looking forward to working with Urban Balance in planning itineraries and logistics of retreats. Onsite her goal is to make sure each client’s own personal experience during the retreat is everything they’ve dream it to be. When Carolyn is not traveling, or leading a group, she currently is working as a RN in a Portland, OR hospital.  She has lectured to various groups covering all aspects of international travel planning, medical advice and travel photography.  She resides in Portland, Oregon.
